Livingstone Academy Autism Center, (LAAC), is an independent, non-profit, private school that specializes in serving the unique educational needs of children with autism and autism related learning disabilities. LAAC serves students in grades K-8 with the overarching goal of providing individualized educational programs while focusing on the social skills development, daily functional living skills and emotional/behavioral wellness of each student. By offering a continuum of services based on the individual requirements of each student and providing low student-teacher ratios, LAAC strives to ensure a positive learning environment in which all students are challenged to achieve their full potential. With love and acceptance, our teachers and staff will foster the growth, independence, and development of every child.
What We Offer:
Curriculum
Livingstone Academy Autism Center uses a multi-modality teaching approach to address the unique learning styles and diverse needs of students with autism and related learning disabilities. Curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, and Access Points for Exceptional Student Education. Experiential learning is emphasized and supported through the use of “hands-on” activities with manipulatives and evidenced-based academic programming. The curriculum includes but is not limited to the following: SRA Reading Mastery, Journeys, A Beka, Explode the Code, SRA Number Worlds, Saxon Math, Touch Math, Handwriting Without Tears, Write Source, Visualizing and Verbalizing, Talkies, TCI-Social Studies Alive, Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt, and AGS.
Sensory Gym
All students at Livingstone Academy Autism Center will have daily access to our sensory gym that is located within the school. This space is designed to provide a “sensory diet” to students on the autism spectrum, who often times have secondary sensory processing difficulties. Some sensory processing concerns that will be addressed through regular use of the sensory room and the equipment include, but are not limited to: tactile defensiveness, sensory seeking, body/spatial awareness, visual motor integration, and vestibular and proprioceptive input.
Speech and Language Therapy
A full range of diagnostic testing and therapy is available for students with speech, language and communication disorders who qualify for services. Beth Ingram Therapy Services provides qualified therapists who work directly with the students at LAAC at no additional cost to families.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is available to LAAC students in the school setting and is provided by experienced therapists who are committed to providing quality therapy. Therapists work with students on an individual basis in order to meet the specific needs of each child.
Applied Behavioral Analysis
Livingstone Academy Autism Center has partnered with several ABA companies in a collaborative effort to provide students with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) within the school setting. We facilitate and coordinate ABA therapy services for students who may require additional support. Depending on the needs and eligibility of the student, services can be provided in the on-site clinic, in the classroom setting, or in the home. Qualified behavior therapists are directly supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA’s) who have specialized training and experience in working with students on the autism spectrum. This interdisciplinary approach, unique to LAAC, enhances the student’s educational experience and increases their opportunities for success.
